Democratic Progressive Party and DPP

DPP: In his 1991 book The Third Wave, U.S. political scientist Samuel Huntington 1927-2008 proposed a two-turnover test as a criterion for measuring the consolidation of democracy, according to Asahi Shimbun. But one DPP official said the next one will be the real turnover because the DPP remained a parliamentary minority when infighting in the Kuomintang helped it ascend to power. That viewpoint implies democracy in Taiwan has yet to be consolidated and Taiwan s unified local elections in November ended in a crushing defeat for the ruling Kuomintang Nationalist Party , giving the opposition Democratic Progressive Party a chance to regain power when the next presidential election is held in early 2016. Taiwan has passed this test as a matter of form because a protracted Kuomintang dictatorship was followed by an electoral turnover to the DPP in 2000 and a reversal of power to the Kuomintang in 2008.
