Trading Day and Tokyo Market Closed

The 225-issue Nikkei average shed 239.64 points, or 1.23 percent, to close at 19,291.99. The Tokyo market was closed from Monday through Wednesday for the Golden Week holidays. Although Tokyo stocks showed some resilience in early trading, the market tumbled again in the middle of the morning and remained weak the rest of the day.
