solar plant projects: The plant, located in central Fukushima Prefecture, is one of the increasing number of solar plant projects utilizing abandoned golf courses, many of which were built during the nation economic boom years, according to Asahi Shimbun. But the popularity of golf has been on the decline in Japan for many years. But from the sky, the Sunny Solar Fukushima Central Plant looks like a tanada --a rice paddy terrace that offers ubiquitous beauty in Japan mountainous regions. The new plant, which began operating in March, stands on a former golf course that was closed in the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, which was triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. According to the Nippon Golf-Course Employer Association , there were plans to turn about 110 golf courses into solar energy plants at the end of March and about 60 of them have been converted. Taking advantage of a prime location with abundant sunlight on mountain slopes, the Sunny Solar Fukushima Central Plant is capable of generating electricity for about 8,000 regular households each day.
