Initially that boosted US shares, but then they gave up ground to close a little lower. Australian stocks had the opposite response, falling almost 1 per cent at one point, before being up by almost that amount. The broader All Ordinaries had a similar 23-point gain to 5,194. In the end, the benchmark ASX 200 index closed 0.5 per cent higher at 5,171.
