The Izena is the last vessel in the line of 10 patrol boats exclusively targeting the Senkaku Islands. One of the vessels, the 1,500-ton Izena, was handed over to the coast guard at the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. These boats were produced following the nation decision to put the disputed islets in the East China Sea under state ownership in September 2012, which subsequently soured relations between Tokyo and Beijing. Together with another patrol vessel the coast guard received on Feb. 24 at a shipyard in Okayama Prefecture, the Izena will be attached to the Ishigaki Coast Guard Office based in Ishigaki, Okinawa Prefecture. Tensions in the region remain high, as Chinese government ships continue to enter the waters around the islands under Japan control.
