Official economic figures show sales of existing US homes were surprisingly strong in March, rising 5.1 per cent, against predictions of a 3.9 per cent increase. Analysts said the data underlined the ongoing recovery in the housing market, despite signs of sluggish first quarter economic growth. The S&P 500 edged 0.1 per cent higher to 2,102 and the Nasdaq added 8 points to 4,948. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 0.2 per cent higher at 18,096.
