Mackay: The Australian Local Government Association latest State of the Regions report looked at factors influencing economic and development growth in regions across the country, according to Australian Broadcasting Corporation. It pointed out innovation should be looked at as the core driver of long-term economic growth while the resource industry fluctuates. Map: Mackay 4740 A new report has found regional areas, such as Mackay in north Queensland, will have to rely on innovation for economic growth as the mining boom continues to subside. For Mackay, it found the region unemployment rate for this year was 7.9 per cent, which is an increase of 1.5 per cent from two years ago. As a highlight, it identified tourism in the Whitsundays as one of the region best economic providers. It also found the average annual population dropped 0.6 of a per cent from 2014.
