: On Monday, the Nikkei gained 365.64 points, according to The Japan Times. The Topix index closed up 14.71 points, or 1.15 percent, at 1,293.90, after rising 28.36 points the previous day. It rose 203.81 points, or 1.28 percent, to end at 16,169.11, its first finish above 16,000 since June 13. Stocks opened weaker after the dollar fell below ¥104 but soon attracted buybacks amid a halt in the yen rise. In the afternoon, stocks extended gains in thin trading marked by the absence of aggressive sellers, the brokers said. The dollar recovery to ¥104 prompted index futures-led purchases, pushing the Nikkei into positive territory later in the morning, brokers said.
