turnbull government: But the long, eight-week winter campaign may yet prove to be a stroke of political genius in an economic sense, according to Nine News Australia. Heading into the campaign, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Treasurer Scott Morrison enjoyed the benefit of the strongest economic growth in more than three years and the lowest jobless rate since the 2013 election. The Turnbull government lost plenty of skin at the July 2 election - 12 seats, possibly 13 - to get over the line with the smallest of majorities. It provided a platform for the government to spruik its economic plan for "jobs and growth", even if in the end it didn't resonate with many voters. Retail spending has slowed, and declining consumer confidence suggests it is unlikely to improve in the immediate future. But economic figures in recent weeks suggest its election sell would have been even harder if it had waited until September to go to the polls - a timeframe that was being promoted at the start of the year.
