The Topix index of all first-section issues was down 21.40 points, or 1.56 percent, at 1,347.04, after losing 24.75 points the previous trading day. The market accelerated its downswing later in the morning session. The Tokyo market opened sharply lower, after the U.S. Dow Jones industrial average extended its losing streak to a sixth market day on Thursday and the yen strengthened against the dollar amid a prevailing risk-averse mood ahead of the closely watched U.S. election on Tuesday.
