prawns: Australia had been considered free of the disease but that changed on December 1 when it was revealed prawns at a southeast Queensland farm had tested positive, according to Nine News Australia. Since then three other nearby farms have returned positive tests and, most concerning of all, so too have wild prawns taken from the nearby Logan River. One possibility authorities are examining is whether it hitched a ride with raw prawns imported from overseas, where white spot disease has had devastating effects on farmed prawn production. White spot has long been considered a significant threat to Australia biosecurity, and imported raw prawns a possible entry path for white spot and other diseases that affect crustaceans. In April 2010, Biosecurity Australia beefed up quarantine rules in a bid to mitigate that risk. A 2009 report on the risks posed by imported prawns found that without proper safeguards, there was a high likelihood the diseases they carry could infect Australian prawn populations.
