record levels: The abalone price in China has reached record levels of up to A85 a kilogram, which translates from a low- to mid- A60 price for fishers, according to Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Chief executive of the Tasmanian Abalone Council Dean Lisson said the price had been boosted by a combination of the lower Australian dollar and a damaging typhoon in China's major abalone farming region. Supplied Tasmanian Abalone Council Map TAS Australia's abalone industry is expecting record high prices for wild-caught abalone will be sustained into the Chinese New Year at the end of January. China produces by far the largest amount of abalone in the world and it is grown in farms, Mr Lisson said. China's farms are concentrated on the coastline between China and Taiwan and are subjected to regular typhoon activity. The farm sector in China is relatively new; it has really only been flourishing for about a decade.
