david wagner: This, at least, is no drastically misguided attempt at a Hail Mary from Huddersfield, according to The Independent. It was actually Wagner who told the club he wanted to leave, albeit in the summer. David Wagner left Huddersfield Town on Monday night, long before the end of the season, and before he can have any relegation on his CV. The latter was undeniably on its way given the club are adrift at the bottom of the Premier League, but that is not a surprise, nor is it that the reason he is leaving. Because of that, and the fact presently being a Premier League club makes such a difference to any prospective appointment, Huddersfield have decided to try to bring in a replacement now. Wagner himself genuinely wants what's best for the club, and thereby agreed it might be best to go now. The word reluctantly however, is one repeatedly being used around the situation.

defence minister: REUTERS/Alkis Konstantinidis The coalition governing Greece for the past four years crumbled on Sunday after Defense Minister Panos Kammenos, head of the Independent Greeks ANEL party, left the government, leaving Tsipras short of an outright majority in parliament and raising the possibility of a snap election, according to The Independent. But investors are relatively confident that Tsipras can win the vote and the market reaction has been muted. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras attends the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed Defence Minister and former Chief of Hellenic National Defence General Staff Evangelos Apostolakis at the Presidential Palace in Athens, Greece, January 14, 2019. Even if he loses, it would mean bringing an election scheduled for October forward by a few months, bankers and analysts said. Greek lawmakers will start debating the confidence motion on Tuesday, culminating in a vote late on Wednesday. A positive confidence vote for Tsipras remains the most likely outcome but even the eventuality of snap elections could be viewed as a shortening of the period of uncertainty, said Tasos Anastasatos, chief economist at Athens-based Eurobank.

frankfurt: Sven Henkes, managing director of ZIEGERT Knight Frank Frankfurt GmbH, has been conducting business with a sizable client base across the globe, according to Global Times China. ZIEGERT Gruppe boasts clients from 37 nations including the UK, the US and Russia, which represent the top three countries in their international customer base. In response to these changes, Berlin's largest property brokerage enterprise, ZIEGERT Gruppe, joined forces with Knight Frank LLC of London in 2017 to form ZIEGERT Knight Frank Frankfurt GmbH and has expanded into other German cities, most notably Frankfurt during the course of 2018. In recent years, they have also experienced an influx of Chinese buyers and investors that Henkes says often look for a trusted partner when purchasing real estate in Berlin, a city he claims is more attractive than ever. He added that Chinese who are interested in investing in Berlin are big fans of the classic European architecture of the 19th century. Chinese buyers like to diversify their investment portfolio and they value German quality and reliability, Henkes said.

next-generation chipset: Instead, it points to the colossal progress local companies have made over the recent years in narrowing the technological gap between China and developed countries, which inadvertently makes some feel nervous as well as lays the psychological groundwork for the Chinese people to proudly opt for indigenous brands, according to Global Times China. There are signs that headwinds, on multiple fronts, especially on the political side, that the Chinese telecoms firm is faced with, have driven the intrinsically motivated company into a greater commitment to research and development R&D . As an indication of its commitment, Huawei took the wraps off its next-generation chipset for servers last week. Nevertheless, that's not to say the nation's pride in its technology is being blindly driven by a populist sentiment. The new chipset known as the Kunpeng 920 is named after a giant bird in Chinese mythology, apparently signaling the company's ambition to fly high in the global tech space. The latest addition to Huawei's 7-nanometer chip portfolio that also includes the Kirin 980 created for its smartphones and the Ascend 910 designed for artificial intelligence applications running in the cloud is expected to further enhance the company's capabilities in one of China's weak links in the tech world, namely chipmaking. The chipset, based upon architecture from UK-headquartered ARM which is now owned by Soft Bank, is envisioned to give a big boost to Huawei's cloud business, extending its strength beyond the sphere of telecommunications equipment and mobile devices.

balance: The resulting balance of -7 percentage points marks a reversal from 12 in the previous quarter is the first contraction in demand since September 2013, according to The Guardian. The decline is expected to continue, with 20% of firms predicting a further drop in business volumes over the coming quarter, versus 12% forecasting a rise, a balance of -9. The latest CBI/PwC Financial Services Survey showed the financial services sector had a difficult end to 2018, with just 24% of firms reporting a rise in business volumes in the three months to December, compared with 32% having experienced a decline. That is the weakest outlook since December 2009. A combination of macroeconomic and Brexit uncertainty, regulatory compliance and global market volatility are taking a toll on the UK's financial services sector, the CBI's chief economist, Rain Newton-Smith, said. The report said the pessimistic outlook was in line with subdued prospects for the wider UK economy given weak wage growth and the impact that Brexit uncertainty has had on investment.

bulawayo: They came on the first day of a three-day general strike called by unions amid an intensifying economic crisis, according to The Guardian. There were clashes in the capital, Harare, and in Bulawayo, a city in the south, as police attempted to disperse groups of youths who had lit fires in streets, erected barricades and, in some cases, looted shops. The clashes were the worst outbreak of disorder in the southern African country since the aftermath of elections last year, when six civilians were shot dead by police. Other protesters blocked highways and tried to force companies that had remained open to comply with the shutdown. In the poor neighbourhood of Mabvuku, four civilians were reportedly shot and injured by police. In Chitungwiza, a satellite town of the capital where anti-government feeling runs high, a police station was reportedly besieged and automatic gunfire was heard.

: The first quarter of 2019 is expected to be particularly weak in Canada due to an 8.7 per cent reduction in oilsands output that kicked in at the start of January, according to The Toronto Star. Ben Nelms / Bloomberg File Photo In the United States and Germany, the tentative signs of easing growth momentum that were flagged in last month's assessment have been confirmed, the Paris-based research organization said in a statement. The monthly composite leading indicators report Monday affirmed slowing growth across the 36-nation OECD with more declines on the horizon for Canada, the U.K., the Eurozone including Germany, France and Italy and in the United States where some cooling is expected later this year. Most forecasters have been anticipating a global slowdown, with the first quarter of 2019 being seen as particularly weak in Canada due to an 8.7 per cent reduction in oilsands output that kicked in at the start of January. Article Continued Below The OECD data, designed to anticipate turning points in economic activity up to nine months ahead, continues to flag stable growth in Japan, with easing momentum seen for Brazil and Russia. We do, however, continue to think growth will rebound from that weak showing as oil production ramps up and the rest of the economy continues to grow roughly at potential, said Scotiabank deputy chief economist Jean-Francois Perrault in an email.

On Saturday, the ongoing partial government shutdown broke the record to become the longest government shutdown in US history -- with no end in sight. Huge share of government workers were going to take vacation days, say between Christmas and New Year's. The shutdown has impacted roughly a quarter of the federal government and hundreds of thousands of federal workers. And then they come back and then they get their back pay, then they're, in some sense they're better off, Hassett said. oil projects: Other lenders including HSBC, RBS and Lloyds outlined their own commitments last year, according to The Guardian. Despite meeting environmental activist groups including Greenpeace and Share Action while finalising the policy in recent weeks, Barclays stopped short of introducing a full ban on funding for oil projects linked to tar sands. Barclays is the last major UK bank to publish rules for how it will conduct business with companies involved in carbon-heavy industries such as oil and coal. The policy document says that any transaction where proceeds are used for exploration, extraction, processing or transport of tar sands oil including pipelines will face enhanced due diligence . The bank will also ask firms to prove they have considered the environmental and social impacts associated with their projects. The activist group occupied a Barclays branch in London, and thousands of customers threatened to switch banks unless Barclays promised not to invest in pipelines for tar sands oil. The Treasury has always been primarily a finance ministry that views its main task as ensuring the nation's budget arithmetic adds up. It is actually a super-ministry combining functions separated in many other countries management of the economy and control of the public finances. Down the ages, the Treasury has argued there is nothing incompatible about its two objectives.
